Trigger Point
Summary:
A "trigger point" is a specific area of tenderness located in muscle. When pressed, a trigger point is painful at the site of pressure, but causes also pain in another, distant area of the body. For example, pressure on trigger points in the upper trapezius muscle (between the neck and the upper shoulder) often produces pain in the side of the head, which may radiate up into the face and around the ear. The exact nature of trigger points and the means by which they cause shooting pain are unknown. However, they appear to be associated with localized muscle spasm. On careful examination, a firm, taut muscle band can often be felt in the trigger-point area.
