Neck Pain
Summary:
Also called Cervical Pain, this can result from injury to the neck muscles, bones, ligaments, disks or nerve roots. Pain may be due to trauma, as can occur from a bad fall or from a motor vehicle accident, or may be due to chronically poor posture or overuse of the neck. Arthritis alone rarely causes neck pain, but an arthritic neck subjected to acute trauma or to chronic overuse can become quite painful. Chronic neck pain can be accompanied by numbness and tingling down one or both arms if there is disc or nerve root involvement. Treatment addresses the source of the pain and may include ice, heat, medication, physical therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, manipulation, or muscle relaxation training. In severe injury, removal of a ruptured disk may be required.
